After hours and days of searching, the crew of MV Nakoraoi finally found the dead body of Rene Atanieru - one of the three fishermen who went fishing on a wooden boat since last Friday (30 August) and reported to have never returned. These fishermen were from KPC Kekeiaki Group in Arorae island whom were out fishing for the birthday feast of their pastor’s grandchild, Nei Tamaroa.
When found, Rene’s body was within his own lavalava which he had stretched and tied to the four fuel tanks of their boat. The crew carefully pulled his body up onto their vessel with the help of their fishing net. The discovery of Rene’s body happened three days after the fishermen first went missing. Rene’s body was going bad as proven in his skin and eyes. The other two fishermen haven’t been found yet therefore the search is still underway.
The boat used by Rene and his two friends had been washed up onto the shore of Arorae and confirmed to be badly damaged. The funeral feast and service for Rene was held at the station of Kekeiaki Group on Arorae in their mwaneaba Tion 2. The search for Rene’s friends is still being carried out by MV Nakoraoi.
