Stories From Kiribati

One afternoon five little boys of about the same age were playing hide and seek in the house. I was reading when one of them just entered my room and asked if he could hide himself there. I was going to say ‘no’ but then I changed my mind and let him in. He was the youngest of them all.
Minutes later I heard the shout of the seeker. It was a signal warning to his friends that he was on his way, looking for them. All was quiet as nobody wanted to be caught. After a while, I heard voices from the other rooms which showed that all were caught except Mag, the boy who hid in my room. One of them shouted, “Don’t come out Mag or the seeker will find you. You are the last one left.”
I heard the sound of the footsteps coming towards my room. Then there was a knock.
“Come in!” I said.
The seeker silently walked in, looked around then asked, “Did you see Mag?”
Instead of answering him, I asked,” Why are you looking for him?”
With roaming eyes, he responded,” We are going out to buy some ice-cream.”
After saying that he called out,” Mag we are going!” then closed the door. He didn’t go but waited just there. When Mag heard the bang of the door he ran out shouting, “Hey! Wait for me!”
