Posted by Amota Eromanga on October 13, 2016 at 5:35 AM Comments comments (0)

She couldn't believe her ears when her mother told her that she was going to Maiana, her home-island, to spend Christmas with her grandparents. Tina, the only daughter of Timau and Nei Rite, had always wanted to visit another island but her parents never allowed it. Now she had completed Year Two at KGV & EBS and her grandparents had asked her parents to allow her to come for Christmas.

Her first few days with her grandparents were a bit boring because she spent most of he...

Why the sky is far away?

Posted by Amota Eromanga on October 1, 2016 at 5:20 AM Comments comments (0)

Long ago the sky was close to the earth. Men and women did not have to plant their own food or go fishing. Instead, when they were hungry, they just reached up and broke off a piece of the sky and eat. Sometimes the sky tasted like ripe pandanus. Other times it tasted like fried fish. The sky was always delicious.

People in the village spent their time playing sports and dancing. At night they sang songs and told stories. The island king, Ueantabo, had a wonderful island. ...

Fifty dollars

Posted by Amota Eromanga on September 14, 2012 at 3:00 PM Comments comments (0)

In my family, I have only one sister. She is older than me. She is very bad as she always tells our mother bad things about me. That’s why mother thinks that I am naughty. Not just that, but my sister is also greedy for money.

One day, mother gave me some money for my good school report. She gave me twenty dollars and reminded me that it was for me only. She didn’t give any to my sister since she got poor marks at school. But my bad sister took the fifty dollar not...

Easy to let you go

Posted by Amota Eromanga on September 13, 2012 at 5:00 PM Comments comments (0)

27th of May 1997 was the first day of my date. I was in love with the girl named Joana. She was from Cuba and she looked very beautiful to me. Honestly, I loved her very much without knowing how much she loved me. I was indeed a man of high status and position. However I hid my full information from her, so that she loved me for who I was instead of what I was.

Time and days passed and my love for her grew more and more. Then something happened – her attitude chan...

A bad dream

Posted by Amota Eromanga on September 10, 2012 at 4:05 AM Comments comments (0)

There was nothing I could do when all of a sudden a voice advised me. So I ran as fast as I could for the thing that I saw was a ghost. I ran on and on then looked back to see if it was still following me. Yes it was still after me. I shouted at it and said, “Hey, what do you want from me?”

The ghost replied, “I want you to be my friend forever.”

“No way!” I said.

It came closer to me and added, “Then...

My lucky Day

Posted by Amota Eromanga on September 7, 2012 at 1:40 AM Comments comments (0)

One morning while I was still in bed, someone knocked on my door. I opened it and it was my elder sister who came to ask me to do the job for her because she would have a meeting at 9:30am. I turned to look at the clock and it was 9:00 so I said, “Okay, no problem.”

She hugged and kissed me on the cheek then she went off. I went back to bed thinking if she was really going to a meeting or going to see her friends or maybe meeting her boyfriend. However, I started...

I do not know what to do

Posted by Amota Eromanga on September 6, 2012 at 5:05 AM Comments comments (0)

One Friday afternoon, I went to my friends to tell them of our picnic on Saturday. Then I went back home. On my way back, I began to feel something strange. It was as if something bad was happening at home. I hurriedly walked back without stopping anywhere along the way.

When I got home, I saw my father beating my mother. I was very sad and angry when I saw dad kicking, punching and beating my mother. I knew that kaokioki (coconut wine) was confusing him because he looked ver...

The Betrayer

Posted by Amota Eromanga on September 5, 2012 at 12:10 AM Comments comments (0)

It was more than I could imagine when I heard her saying those words. She said to me that she was now my friend. So I began treating her, the ways best friends treated each other. She was very close to me much like a sister. I counted her as one of our family members. I also really liked her because I had no sister as I was the only girl in my family.

One fine day, we went out playing in the field. I was on cloud nine because we played lots of good and fun games. More friends...

A lucky walk

Posted by Amota Eromanga on September 4, 2012 at 12:25 AM Comments comments (0)

One fine, sunny and beautiful day, I decided to go for a walk. I quickly ran back to my house and got myself ready.

I put on my hat then grabbed other things I would need for a walk. I started walking on a long field where planes used to land on. It was a long straight field - about 400 meters or more. I just kept on walking until I came to its halfway. Then I started running slowly so that I could reach the other end and rest my legs which were now feeling fatigue. My heart s...

My Parents

Posted by Amota Eromanga on September 3, 2012 at 4:05 AM Comments comments (0)

Every single day, I always prayed to my heavenly father to bring my Dad back and to help my mother who was still sick. My family was not complete as dad was not with us. I lived with my mom at home, just the two of us. My father had not been with us and I didn’t know if he was still alive. Everyday I asked my mother to stay strong. Every minute, I cried and prayed with all my heart.

My mother was getting worse, and I didn’t have enough money to pay for her medical ...

The Promise

Posted by Amota Eromanga on July 9, 2012 at 3:15 AM Comments comments (0)

When I was in Form 2, there was someone who was very special to me and that was Tokanteata, my best friend. Tokanteata was a real friend to me. She was so kind and always showed respect to her parents and to all her teachers. Tokanteata and I made a promise that we wouldn’t get married nor drink liquor until we got our jobs. I supported that so we swore to each other and if one of us broke that promise, we would never forgive each other.

A few months later, something went wrong -...

“What if my best friend finds out?” I asked him.

“No, she’ll never find out about us. We will keep this a secret.” he replied.

Well, I cheated on my best friend. Her boyfriend and I had been dating for the past few days and she didn’t know about us. My best friend’s name was Temaua and her boyfriend’s name was Johnny. He was so handsome. He had brown eyes with fair skin, thin and pink lips. Well, he had been Temaua’s boyfriend...

Two girls were having a conversation inside their classroom. One of them was Nei Miri who just came to Tarawa from an outerisland. The other came from Betio. Yes it was during their short break time.

Nei Miri began,”Teretia, can you teach me how to use a telephone?”

“Yes, I’m willing to help you”

“Know what? I feel a little scared when I hold it cos I really don’t know how to use it.”

“No, you don’t feel that ...

Teacher Came To My Parents

Posted by Amota Eromanga on June 10, 2012 at 1:35 PM Comments comments (0)

I did not know what to do when my teacher came to see my parents. I was afraid because I knew I had done something wrong at school. The teacher found me drinking beer at the back of the school compound.

I ran away because I knew he would take me to the Principal. I scooted off and soon very far from him. At around 3 o'clock in the afternoon, I went back home and tried to control myself so my parents would not notice that I had been drinking.

While I was eating my lunch, I saw my...

Happiest Day Of My Life

Posted by Amota Eromanga on June 10, 2012 at 3:10 AM Comments comments (0)

I didn't expect my mother to wake me up and asked me to pack the things I would need for travelling. I didn't know why but as I was asked to hurry, I began packing without having time to ask questions.

When I finished packing, I then asked for the reason. "Why am I packing and where am I going?"

"Dear, you and I are going to Fiji. We'll be attending your sister's 21st Birthday there." my mother answered.

"Woow! And .. what day are we going?" I asked excitedly.

The Day I Don't Want To Remember

A few more days before my fiance arrived in Kiribati from Hawaii. I was very happy when I got a mail from him saying that he had something to tell me when he came back. Thoughts were running through my mind thinking that may be he was going to fix our wedding day.

I couldn't imagine how happy I was. My friends were suprised to see me like that. They asked why and I told them of my coming man and his mail. "He is going to tell me something." I told my friends.

"Congratulations girl...

School Life

Last year when I was in Form 2, I was chosen as a female Captain of my form. My partner (male captain) was a very handsome boy who had blue eyes like the color of the deep ocean and his lips were red like red roses. His eyes and lips were the first to have ever seen in my life. Oh and I would tell you my secret - inside my pure heart, I really had a feeling for him.

One morning when I was busy studying my English, one of my classmates ran to me and said, "Hey, your partner asked for you...

Sad Day For Me

Posted by Amota Eromanga on June 2, 2012 at 1:35 PM Comments comments (0)

It was a very sad day for me when I heard that my best friend died. I cried and told mother, "Mum, my friend died yesterday! I want to visit him before he is buried."

My mother gave me some money so I went to the funeral feast. When I got at my friend's home, I saw my teachers and friends crying beside my friend who was lying and covered with white sheet. I stayed there for the whole day.

The next day, at 10 o'clock, the people took my friend and buried him in his grave. After th...

It was Saturday night about 7 o'clock that I had my bath then I put on my night clothes. I became sleepy but my sister came and asked me to watch video with her.

When the movie started, I saw that it was a scary movie. I told my sister to find a different and more interesting movie but she refused. This scary movie was about an old woman who kidnapped little children and locked them up. Then she took out their eyes.

I was really scared so I asked my sister to go to bed before her....
